A forest walk, lunch among the vineyards, a family outing or two days of wellness – six practical ideas to help you choose and plan your next trip.

An October weekend can begin with coffee in a town square, continue with a walk through fallen leaves and end over a long lunch. Or it can take a completely different shape: two nights in the mountains, an afternoon in an art gallery or a family outing where children meet animals they have only seen in photographs.

The key is to choose a destination that suits how you want to spend your time. If you need rest, an overloaded itinerary can easily get in the way. When travelling with children, a beautiful viewpoint is only part of the plan: breaks, meals and manageable walks matter just as much. And if rain is forecast, a good indoor activity may be more valuable than the view from your room.

Here are six ideas for different kinds of October weekends, with plans that leave enough room to enjoy the experience.

1. For Walks and Wine: Fruška Gora and Sremski Karlovci

Best for: friends, couples and travellers who want nature, local wine and cultural sights in one day.
Allow: a full day; stay overnight for a more relaxed pace.

Fruška Gora and Sremski Karlovci complement each other well. A forest walk gives the day an active start, while Karlovci offers historic architecture, cultural attractions and wineries with a long tradition. Together, they make it possible to enjoy several different experiences without constantly moving between destinations.

For a day trip, choose one marked forest route that suits your fitness level rather than trying to visit several walking areas. Afterwards, head to Karlovci, explore the town centre and leave time for lunch.

If you would like a wine tasting, book one winery and organise the rest of the day around that appointment. Ask how long the visit lasts, what the tasting includes and whether food is available. Bermet, a wine closely associated with Sremski Karlovci, makes an interesting introduction to the local wine tradition.

Suggested itinerary: morning walk → explore Karlovci → lunch → pre-booked wine tasting.

Getting there and around: a car makes it easier to combine a forest route with Karlovci. If your day includes a tasting, arrange a designated driver or organised transport.

If it rains: shorten the forest walk and focus on a cultural visit, wine tasting and lunch. Check tour availability before setting off.

Practical tip: do not assume you can visit every winery without an appointment. One well-planned visit can be more rewarding than several rushed stops.

2. For a Couples’ Getaway: Vrdnik and a Wellness Break

Best for: couples who value rest, good food and comfortable accommodation more than a packed sightseeing schedule.
Allow: one or two nights.

Vrdnik is a good choice when you want the option of a walk without making the entire weekend dependent on the weather. Its spa and wellness offering includes facilities such as baths, massages and saunas, with the surroundings of Fruška Gora close by.

Here, planning begins with your accommodation. If you imagine a weekend with a pool and sauna, check whether those facilities are in the property where you are staying and whether access is included in the price. An apartment in Vrdnik and a hotel with its own wellness centre can offer very different experiences.

Keep your arrival day simple: check in, take a short walk and enjoy dinner. Schedule your main wellness session for the following morning or early afternoon instead of trying to fit everything in as soon as you arrive.

Suggested itinerary: arrival and a gentle walk → dinner → wellness and lunch the next day → an unhurried journey home.

Getting there and around: if you are driving, choose accommodation close to the facilities you plan to use. If you are arriving by other means, check local transfers and distances to restaurants and the wellness centre.

If it rains: indoor facilities can remain the focus of your stay, provided you have checked availability and booking requirements.

Practical tip: before paying, ask exactly what the wellness package includes, whether reservations are required and when you can use the facilities. A photograph of a pool does not tell you what is included in your stay.

3. For a Family Outing: Discovering Nature at Zasavica

Best for: families who want time outdoors, opportunities to see animals and an outing without a long hiking route.
Allow: half a day in the reserve, plus travel time.

Zasavica offers a chance to discover nature through its waterways, pastures and animals. Visitors can also see traditional domestic breeds, including the Balkan donkey, Mangalitsa pig and Podolian cattle. This gives a family outing a focus beyond simply going for a walk.

Start at the visitor centre, where you can ask which activities are available that day. Then adapt your visit to your children’s ages and the weather: a short walk, time watching the animals and a break are often a better combination than trying to do everything.

Treat a boat ride as an optional addition, checking schedules and conditions in advance, rather than making it the sole reason for visiting. The reserve welcomes visitors daily from 9 a.m. until sunset, so an earlier arrival makes sense in October.

Zasavica Nature Reserve

Suggested itinerary: arrive during the morning → get information at the visitor centre → explore and see the animals → meal break → a final short walk.

Getting there and around: a car is practical for a family outing. If you use public transport, you will need to arrange the final part of the journey to the reserve separately.

If it rains: this is primarily an outdoor trip. In heavy or persistent rain, changing the date is a better option than expecting a full day of indoor activities.

Practical tip: bring shoes that can get muddy and spare clothes for children. If you use a pushchair, check which areas are accessible before visiting.

4. For a Mountain Weekend: Divčibare at an Easy Pace

Best for: travellers who want walks, mountain air and enough time to enjoy their accommodation.
Allow: two nights if travelling from farther away; one for a shorter break.

Divčibare combines a mountain stay with walking trails leading towards the surrounding peaks. For an October weekend, choosing a suitable route matters more than compiling a long list of viewpoints.

Use your arrival day for a short walk near your accommodation. Plan one longer marked route for the following morning, confirming your choice against the forecast and local information about trail conditions.

An autumn landscape does not guarantee clear skies or identical foliage colours across the mountain. Choose somewhere you would also enjoy spending a few hours if fog rolls in or rain begins.

Divčibare

Suggested itinerary: arrival and a short walk → your chosen route the next morning → a late lunch and rest → a slow final morning.

Getting there and around: a car offers more flexibility, but check access to your property, particularly if it is away from the main road.

If it rains: shorten your walks and spend more time relaxing at your accommodation. Choose Divčibare if that slower day appeals to you; if you want plenty of indoor attractions, a city break is a better fit.

Practical tip: ask about heating and bring footwear with good grip. Wet leaves and mud can make an otherwise straightforward trail more demanding.

5. For Local Flavours and History: Topola, Oplenac and a Winery Visit

Best for: travellers interested in cultural heritage, wine and the landscapes of Šumadija.
Allow: a full day.

Topola and Oplenac bring together cultural sightseeing and Šumadija’s wine tradition. St George’s Church on Oplenac, which houses the Karađorđević dynasty’s mausoleum, is particularly notable for its rich mosaics. The surrounding area is also associated with the Oplenac wine route.

Begin at Oplenac and give yourself time to appreciate the church interior. Afterwards, choose one more cultural stop in Topola or take a lunch break. Arrange your winery visit for the second half of the day.

This outing becomes more interesting when you leave time for conversation: about wine, production, local food and the people behind them. If you want to buy wine or another product to take home, ask what is locally produced and how best to store it.

Suggested itinerary: Oplenac → a short visit to Topola → lunch → a pre-booked winery visit.

Getting there and around: a car or pre-arranged transport is the most practical way to combine Topola with a winery outside the centre. Organise transport after your tasting before setting off.

If it rains: keep the church visit and booked tasting, shortening the walks between stops. Check opening hours and visiting arrangements for your chosen date.

Practical tip: visiting in October does not guarantee that you will see the grape harvest. If you are interested in production or a vineyard tour, ask the winery what is possible during your visit.

6. For Changeable Weather: Novi Sad, Art and City Walks

Best for: travellers who want culture, restaurants and the freedom to adjust their plans.
Allow: one day or a weekend with an overnight stay.

Novi Sad is a good choice when you want a trip with more indoor options. Walk around the centre during the dry part of the day, saving a cultural visit for rain or a cooler afternoon.

The Gallery of Matica Srpska is a good starting point for discovering Serbian art: its permanent collection includes painting and graphic art from the 16th to the 21st century. Give it a dedicated part of your day rather than squeezing it into a brief gap between other activities.

For a day trip, the centre, one cultural visit and lunch make a satisfying plan. If you stay overnight, leave Petrovaradin for the following morning, when the forecast may be more favourable.

Novi Sad

Suggested itinerary: walk through the centre → gallery visit → lunch → coffee and another short walk; visit Petrovaradin the next day if staying overnight.

Getting there and around: much of a central itinerary can be covered on foot. If driving, sort out parking at the beginning of the day. If using public transport, check current departures and your arrival point.

If it rains: make the cultural visit your main activity, with shorter walks between breaks. Check the gallery’s opening hours for the day you plan to visit.

Practical tip: choose accommodation near the area where you will spend most of your time. For a short stay, a convenient location can be more useful than extra facilities you will not have time to use.

How to Choose Your October Trip

If you only have one free day, choose somewhere where the return journey will not take up most of your outing. Fruška Gora and Karlovci, Zasavica, Topola or Novi Sad can all work as day trips, depending on your starting point.

For a couples’ getaway, allow at least one overnight stay. For a mountain weekend, leave more flexibility for weather and travel. When visiting with children, plan around their pace, with one main activity and plenty of breaks.

Before booking, add up transport, accommodation, meals, admission fees and extra experiences. Check what is included and what costs extra, especially wellness access, wine tastings and organised activities.

In October, schedule longer walks for the first part of the day, bring layers and check the forecast shortly before leaving. The best plan gives you enough time for what brought you there: the forest, a conversation over lunch, meeting a local producer or simply a few peaceful hours away from your everyday routine.
