Some chroniclers find the origin of the peninsula’s name in the compound of celtic words singa (island) and lia (underwater ground), and consequently the word singalia was created, which with time, in later transcription became ciganlija. As a rare natural treasure, Ada was noticed back in the eras of Karađorđe and Prince Miloš Obrenović, so in 1821. it was proclaimed a national treasure, which it remained until today.

Thanks to the specific microclimate of the peninsula, the temperature is always slightly lower than in the rest of the city, therefore this makes an ideal place for cooling down and escaping the city heat and crowds.
