Mornings in Belgrade usually begin with a good breakfast. And what’s better than burek, the most famous dish with which every working day in Serbia begins.
In the capital of Serbia this traditional food can be bought in almost every bakery or sandwich shop, and you will not go wrong if you buy a cup of yogurt along with burek pie. Interestingly, this dish is a cheap meal that will “keep you fed” for a few hours, and rare are the ones who do not like its specific taste.
If you like meat pies and pies that are made according to old recipes, we encourage you to visit the bakery “Anđelko” which was founded in 1920. Here you will find several types of burek, and the complete pleasure will cost you not more than one or one and a half euros.
When you are already in Balkanska Street, the street with a rich history, make time and walk down the former symbol of the city.
Although the most of old handcraft shops have been transformed into those with newer exterior and interior, traces of the past are still visible. Not far from the Balkanska Street, there is a street called Gavrilo Princip’s Street which was also a trade center before the World War II. If you have not exaggerated with burek pie, here you can satisfy your “need for sweet” in the candy store founded in 1936.
Handmade treatsare still the hallmark of this candy shop, and 300 grams of the popular Turkish delight will cost only 1 euro.
We suggest you spend the calories by walking to the place where most of Belgrade locals like to drink their coffee – Savamala.
Coffee by the river, light music and beautiful view of the capital, will make your afternoon perfect. In the recent years cafes and restaurants in Savamala have become epicenters of gatherings and having a good time, making them the ideal place for those who love the crowds and crazy parties.
However, if you are, an admirer of peaceful and intimate atmosphere, we suggest a coffee at one of the raft restaurants on the river. There is a large variety of rafts – from those with loud music and day parties all the way to those with relaxing rhythms and cozy atmosphere. Everyone can “find something for themselves” on the Belgrade rafts. Prices vary depending on the type of coffee you want to drink and the place where you want to spend your time at, but in most cases you will not have to pay more than one and a half euro for this beverage.
After the afternoon coffee and relaxation with a view of the city where the river Sava and the Danube meet, it’s the time to get to know Belgrade through its museums. These significant buildings have been keeping very valuable historical artifacts, documents and old objects for several centuries.
Nikola Tesla Museum, The Museum of Contemporary Art, The Belgrade City Museum, The Museum of Yugoslav History, The Ethnography Museum as well as many others. For this cultural refinement you will have to pay somewhere between 2 and 4 euros. However, if you want to give this day a full throttle, we suggest that you visit Ada Ciganlija, also known as “The Belgrade Sea”. Here you will be able to walk, swim, go bungee jumping, ride a pedal boat, have fun on some of the fifty sports fields or have a drink in one of the many cafes or restaurants. The decision is yours to make!
You can dine at a variety of places In Belgrade. Starting from numerous fast food kiosks, over the elite capital’s restaurants, to the taverns with local cuisine.
Considering that we want to fit into the budget, we will suggest a good Serbian pljeskavica (hamburger) or sausage. With this popular dish you will not go wrong, and the pleasure will cost you only one or two euros. After a good “pljeska”, take a walk down the famous Knez Mihailova Street to the most important Belgrade cultural and historical site, Kalemegdan fortress.
Once an important military fortress, today is a majestic citadel that is hiding numerous traces of history at every step of the way. Visit the Kalemegdan Park, discover the hidden corners of this ancient fort and experience the most beautiful sunset with the view of the sparkling waves of Belgrade rivers.
Is there a better way to complete the daily sightseeing than by cruising over the amazing Danube waters? Many are of the opinion that Belgrade is most beautiful at night, and the right way to get to know the capital after dark is from one of the boats which cruise the Danube and Sava. Lights of Belgrade bridges, continuous entertainment at numerous River clubs and beauty of the roofs that stick out from the old part of the city, make the Serbian capital unique.
With a glass of wine, a light dinner and music, you will enjoy a romantic ride that will reveal Belgrade from a different angle. Considering that the Yachting Club “Kej” provides free cruises this summer for all the visitors, you will be able to enjoy an affordable dinner and drink at one of the beautiful tourist boats and, of course, the unique view of Belgrade, bathed in moonlight…
