One moment you’re hiking above dramatic gorges, the next you’re swimming in emerald water or enjoying homemade specialties on a terrace overlooking the mountains.
Western Serbia isn’t defined by a single destination. It is defined by the journey between them. Every road leads to another unforgettable landscape, another panoramic viewpoint, another place worth stopping for just a little longer.
Part of the Summer Escapes in Serbia editorial series, this story explores one of the country’s most remarkable regions through the landscapes, local experiences, and slower rhythms that make summer in Serbia so special.
Unlike many destinations where one landmark becomes the highlight of the trip, Western Serbia rewards those who slow down. This is a region made for scenic drives rather than hurried itineraries. It invites travelers to leave the motorway behind, roll down the windows, and follow quiet mountain roads through forests, villages, rivers, and open meadows. Here, the journey itself becomes part of the destination.
While Zlatibor is one of Serbia’s most visited mountain resorts, its greatest summer experiences often lie beyond the busy center. Drive through the rolling pastures toward Sirogojno, where traditional wooden houses tell the story of mountain life, continue to Gostilje Waterfall, or explore Stopića Cave, where naturally cool underground chambers provide welcome relief from the summer heat.

Further away, peaceful mountain roads lead to hidden viewpoints, forest trails, and quiet picnic spots where the only sounds come from birdsong and the breeze through the pines. This is the Zlatibor many visitors never take the time to discover.
Few landscapes capture the essence of a Serbian summer better than Tara. Ancient forests cover the mountain slopes, panoramic viewpoints reveal breathtaking scenery, and countless hiking trails lead through one of Serbia’s best-preserved national parks.
At its foot, Perućac Lake invites visitors to swim, kayak, or simply enjoy long summer afternoons beside the water, while nearby Lake Zaovine offers cooler temperatures and peaceful mountain scenery. Just downstream, Bajina Bašta serves as the gateway to the famous House on the Drina and one of Serbia’s most beloved rivers.

The Drina Valley itself deserves a journey of its own – and that’s exactly why we’ve dedicated a separate story to exploring everything this remarkable river has to offer.
Few places embrace slow travel as naturally as Mokra Gora. The legendary Šargan Eight Railway winds through mountains, bridges, and tunnels that seem almost untouched by time, while nearby Drvengrad, built by filmmaker Emir Kusturica, offers a unique blend of architecture, culture, and mountain charm.

Surrounded by forests and scenic roads, this is one of those places where there’s no reason to hurry.
Further north, another side of Western Serbia begins to unfold. The clear waters of the Gradac River, often considered one of Serbia’s cleanest rivers, offer peaceful riverside walks and refreshing swimming spots just outside Valjevo.

Nearby, Divčibare welcomes visitors with pleasant summer temperatures, open mountain meadows, panoramic viewpoints, and family-friendly hiking trails. It is a quieter, less crowded corner of the region, perfect for travelers looking to escape both the heat and the crowds.
As the West Morava River cuts between the mountains of Ovčar and Kablar, it creates one of Serbia’s most spectacular landscapes. The famous viewpoints above the gorge reveal sweeping panoramas, while below, the river invites visitors to kayak, take a boat ride, or simply enjoy a peaceful afternoon surrounded by nature.

Hidden among the forests, centuries-old monasteries have earned this landscape the nickname “Serbian Mount Athos,” adding another layer to one of the country’s most remarkable summer destinations.
Every journey through Western Serbia is also a journey through its cuisine. Breakfast often begins with homemade bread, rich kajmak, local cheeses, and freshly picked tomatoes. Throughout the day, roadside stalls tempt travelers with raspberries, blueberries, honey, and seasonal fruit, while traditional restaurants serve grilled trout, Zlatibor prosciutto, slow-cooked specialties, and homemade pies prepared from recipes passed down through generations.

Some of the region’s most memorable meals are enjoyed not in cities, but on wooden terraces overlooking rivers, forests, and mountain valleys.
Western Serbia isn’t meant to be explored in a single day. Spend your mornings hiking through Tara or Divčibare, your afternoons swimming in Perućac or enjoying the fresh mountain air of Zlatibor, and your evenings watching the sunset above Ovčar-Kablar or sharing dinner beside the Drina.
There will always be another scenic road to follow. Another village worth visiting. Another viewpoint waiting around the next bend. And perhaps that’s exactly what makes Western Serbia one of the country’s greatest summer escapes.
Not because of one unforgettable destination – but because every kilometre becomes part of the adventure.
