Embassies, consulates and cultural centers of many countries are there to offer any information or help. Most of foreign diplomatic missions are located in Belgrade.
Cultural centers
There is no place like home, that is true, but we assure you that, once you visit Serbia, you will have a second home. For many people from abroad this is a place close to their hearts, so it is no surprise Serbia has found numerous friends in countries that have opened their cultural centers here as a sign of mutual friendship and cooperation.
The first foreign cultural center in Serbia was opened in Belgrade over a century ago. The majority of these centers are located in the very center of the city, in the pedestrian zone, in buildings representing a cultural heritage of the nation’s capital.
We like to believe that Belgrade has been a welcoming host and that other cities in Serbia have also followed its reputation, judging by the number of cultural centers opened around the country.
The first cultural center in Serbia was opened in 1920. It was The Society of Friends of France that with time became the L’Institut français (The French Institute).
The Institute is located in one of the most beautiful buildings in the central pedestrian zone in Belgrade – in Knez Mihailova Street. The Institute also has their offices in Niš and Novi Sad.
Traditional friendship among Serbian and French people has brought numerous activities in the center that today, besides the French language and culture lessons, organizes student exchange programs, scholarships for the most talented students, as well as exhibitions of French artists and literary evenings.
Strolling down Knez Mihailova Street you will reach the Goethe-Institut – the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany. It is the member of the grid of institutions promoting the culture and achievements of Germany in the world.
The Institute has a library with around 12,000 titles, while German newspapers, publications and magazines can be read in the library. The Goethe Institute organizes the German language courses, lectures from the field of science, literature, film and music.
Belgrade was among the first eight cities in the world that had the offices of the British Council opened in Belgrade in 1940. Till this day, this is the right place for everyone who wants to find out something more about the Great Britain and its cultural heritage. It is a non-profitable organization supported by the British Government, promoting its culture, customs and values and building strong connections between two nations.
The American Corner has its offices in Belgrade, Kragujevac, Niš, Novi Sad, Bujanovac, Vranje, Novi Pazar and Subotica. The idea was to offer the visitors the possibility to read books and magazines from the United States in order to improve understanding, cooperation and exchange between two countries. Lectures, literary evenings, English language courses and different entertainment programs, including the programs for the youngest ones, are being organized at the American Corner.
Istituto Italiano di Cultura Belgrado has been working for decades. Its primal goal is promoting culture and cooperation between Serbia and Italy in all spheres from scientific exchange to cooperation in the field of music, literature and film. The Institute organizes different events in order to promote the cooperation, with special emphasis on promoting works of Italian artists in Serbia.
Instituto Cervantes is the cultural and historical landmark of Belgrade and it is located in the very center of the main pedestrian zone, near the Goethe-Institute and L’Institut français (ex. Centre culturel français). Instituto Cervantes works on promoting the language and cultural heritage of all Spanish-speaking countries. The Institute organizes numerous events and has rich cultural program. Here you can learn Spanish language, learn about Spanish-speaking countries, discover their culture and customs…
The Russian-Serbian friendship is well known. Thus the importance of Русский дом в Белградe российский центр науки и культуры в Республике Сербии (the Cultural Center of Russia). It is one of the oldest foreign cultural centers in Serbia. Russian emigrants who fled from Russia during the Revolution and settled here came up with the idea to open this kind of center.
Today this is a modern and well equipped center that offers visitors the opportunity to discover Russian heritage in this region, as well as to learn about Russia, unofficially considered the most beloved country in Serbia. The center has the concert hall where concerts of Russian music and exhibitions of Russian artists are organized. Although the center has changed several names over decades, it has never changed its purpose – this is the place for all the lovers of Russian culture who want to learn something new about this country.
The “Confucius” Institute in Belgrade promotes the culture of the People’s Republic of China. The Institute organizes the courses of Chinese language and the institute owns the rare library of Chinese books in Serbian language. This is one of the latest institutes opened in Serbia and it was opened with the aim to bring together people interested in this far and mysterious country and its representatives in Serbia.
The Österreich Institut aims to promote the culture of Austria and bring together the two countries through mutual understanding and cooperation. Besides numerous lectures and exhibitions, the Österreich Institute organizes the manifestation “Days of Austria” bringing together primarily younger generations and presenting its culture.
Hellenic Foundation for Culture strengthens the traditional Greek-Serbian friendship. Despite being opened just a few years ago, the Institute organizes Greek language courses and numerous cultural manifestations in cooperation with cultural and educational institutions in Serbia.
The Cultural Center of the Republic of Iran was opened in Belgrade over two decades ago. The center aims to present the accomplishments and the culture of this ancient civilization by organizing the courses of Iranian language, exhibitions, the Festival of the Iranian Film. The center also has a significant publishing – here you can find both classics and works of modern Iranian writers. The Center also hosts the manifestation “The Days of Iranian Culture”.
