Jagoštica is a village on the edge. Not only on the edge of Serbia but on the edge of existence as well, it is a truly remarkable place, with extraordinary nature and even more extraordinary people, and it deserves its story to be told.

The village of Jagoštica is located in the municipality of Bajina Bašta, in the west of Serbia, between the National Park Tara and canyon of the Drina river. Its specific geographic position ensures Jagoštica two things – unspoiled nature and isolation.

With the first being the result of the second, and vice-versa, it’s hard to say whether Jagoštica’s title of the most remote village in Serbia is a good or a bad thing.

Jagoštica Village

On one hand, this small Serbian village has only 38 houses and is inhabited by about 67 people, mostly the elderly. There isn’t a single store in the village (the nearest one is 40 km away) nor are there asphalted roads. There are no landlines and no Serbian mobile networks. So, basically, Jagoštica is not only difficult to reach but also not so easy to live in.

However, things are far from grim in Jagoštica. The road to Jagoštica leads through mountains, cliffs and lakes and is rather rough. But it is well-worth the trouble because when you reach this virtually inaccessible village, your reward will be huge.

The view is one that can’t be bought with money. It is simply breathtaking. The spirit of Jagoštica’s untouched nature and its resistant people is simply undeniable, and their energy and strong sense of belonging is almost contagious.

The soil is rich and fertile. Wild and cultivated fruit is plentiful, simply popping from the ground and falling from the trees. Everything edible is completely healthy as it undergoes no processing at all. Therefore, if you’re into eating healthy, in Jagoštica you can take a bite of the most fresh, most juicy fruit you’ll ever taste.

JagošticaFurthermore, its particular position, harsh living conditions and isolation made it a perfect setting for odd but delightful friendships. Such as the one between an old man called deda Vlaja and his white ram Bekan.

Tucked between the Drina canyon and National Park Tara, Jagoštica truly has a lot to offer.

Pastures, pine forests and hills, offer more than enough for anyone in search of clear skies and crisp mountain air.

So, if you’re searching for a unique, authentic and charming place to visit, this small village on the edge of Serbia will surely be a place you’ll remember for the rest of your life.
