When people think of Serbia, they usually imagine mountains, monasteries, traditional villages, and rivers winding through green valleys. Exotic landscapes are rarely the first thing that come to mind.

And yet, hidden across the country are places with turquoise springs, surreal rock formations, deep canyons, pink lakes, and waterfalls surrounded by landscapes that feel almost tropical. Some look more like remote corners of Iceland, hidden jungle pools, or forgotten landscapes from another continent than places in the Balkans.

Late spring – especially May – is one of the best times to experience them. Waterfalls become stronger, forests turn intensely green, and rivers take on vivid shades of emerald and turquoise.

These are some of the most exotic-looking places in Serbia.

Krupajsko Vrelo – A Turquoise Spring Beneath the Cliffs

Hidden below the limestone mountains of eastern Serbia, Krupajsko Vrelo (Krupaj Spring) is one of those places that immediately feels unreal when seen in person. The spring emerges from a cave beneath towering rock walls, creating water so intensely turquoise that it often looks artificially colored in photographs. Surrounded by deep greenery and reflections from the surrounding forest, the landscape feels closer to a hidden tropical spring than to inland Serbia.

In the early morning, mist often hovers above the water, adding to the mysterious atmosphere of the place. During late spring, when the vegetation becomes lush and vibrant, the contrast between the emerald forest and the bright water becomes even more striking.

Despite its beauty, the spring still feels strangely quiet compared to many of Serbia’s better-known attractions.

Perućac Lake – Emerald Water Along the Drina

Few rivers in the Balkans carry colors as striking as the Drina near Perućac Lake. On clear days, the water shifts between emerald green and deep turquoise shades, especially in calmer parts of the lake surrounded by dense forests and steep hills. Seen from above, some sections almost resemble tropical river landscapes.

The atmosphere changes throughout the day. Early mornings bring mist drifting above the water, while afternoons fill the lake with intense reflections from the surrounding greenery. The famous little house balanced on a rock in the middle of the Drina only adds to the surreal feeling of the landscape.

In late spring, before the peak summer crowds arrive, the entire area feels especially peaceful and untouched.

Rosomački Lonci – Serbia’s Hidden Stone Canyon

Deep within the landscapes of Stara Planina lies one of the country’s most unusual natural formations. Rosomački Lonci, also known as Slavinjsko Grlo, is a narrow canyon carved by water over thousands of years. Smooth stone walls rise above crystal-clear pools while the canyon itself twists through the landscape in unexpected shapes.

During spring, when water levels rise and greenery surrounds the rocks, the entire place feels almost jungle-like. The silence inside the canyon, interrupted only by the sound of water, makes it feel isolated from the outside world.

Unlike many larger tourist destinations, Rosomački Lonci still retains the feeling of a hidden natural secret.

Tupavica Waterfall – A Waterfall Surrounded by Greenery

Located on the slopes of Stara Planina, Tupavica Waterfall feels almost cinematic in late spring. Unlike dramatic waterfalls surrounded by bare cliffs, Tupavica is hidden within dense greenery. Water flows down wide rock formations while moss, trees, and wild vegetation surround the entire area.

After rainy spring days, the waterfall becomes even stronger, filling the landscape with sound and movement. The humid air, intense greenery, and isolated setting create a landscape that feels unexpectedly exotic for this part of Europe.

Tavničko Lake – A Hidden Mountain Lake Surrounded by Silence

Hidden among the hills near Zlatibor, Tavničko Lake feels unexpectedly untouched and distant from the more familiar landscapes people associate with the region.

Surrounded by forests and open mountain scenery, the lake often reflects deep shades of green and blue depending on the light and season. In late spring, when the surrounding vegetation becomes lush and vibrant, the entire area takes on an almost dreamlike atmosphere.

Unlike larger and more visited lakes, Tavničko Lake feels quiet and isolated. Early mornings are especially striking, when mist sometimes lingers above the surface and the only sounds come from wind moving through the trees. With its still water, hidden setting, and layers of greenery surrounding it, the lake feels less like a typical mountain destination and more like a forgotten landscape hidden deep within nature.

Prskalo Waterfall – One of Serbia’s Strangest Landscapes

Few waterfalls in Serbia look as unusual as Prskalo Waterfall. Hidden deep within the forests of eastern Serbia, the waterfall appears suddenly among rocks and wilderness, almost as if it erupts directly from the mountain itself. Its strange shape and dramatic surroundings make it look almost unreal from certain angles.

The remote atmosphere of the area only adds to its appeal. Reaching the waterfall feels less like visiting a tourist attraction and more like discovering a hidden landscape forgotten by time.

In spring, when water flow becomes stronger, the entire scene turns even more dramatic.

Vražji Kamen – Stone Formations from Another World

Rising above southern Serbia, Vražji Kamen feels almost mythical. Massive rock formations stand above the valley while the remains of an old church add to the mysterious atmosphere of the landscape. In certain light, the entire area feels more like an ancient lost world than a place in Serbia.

The isolation of the location makes the experience even more striking. Wind moves through the rocks while the surrounding landscape stretches far into the distance. It remains one of the least explored yet visually extraordinary places in the country.

Lazar’s Canyon – A Wild and Prehistoric Landscape

Deep, rugged, and difficult to access, Lazar’s Canyon feels almost prehistoric. Massive cliffs rise above dense forests while hidden caves and narrow passages create one of Serbia’s wildest natural landscapes. Some parts of the canyon remain inaccessible without guides, adding to its untamed atmosphere.

Standing near its edges, it becomes difficult to imagine that landscapes this dramatic remain relatively unknown outside the region.

Blederija Waterfall – Emerald Water Beneath the Forest

Near Miroč Mountain lies Blederija Waterfall, one of the most visually striking waterfalls in eastern Serbia. Its emerald-colored water flows beneath thick greenery and moss-covered rocks, creating a landscape that feels hidden and untouched.

In late spring, when the surrounding forest becomes intensely green, the contrast between water and vegetation becomes even more vivid.

Pačir – Serbia’s Pink Lake

One of Serbia’s most unexpected landscapes can be found in the north of the country. The thermal lake in Pačir is famous for its unusual pink color, created by minerals and microorganisms in the highly saline water.

Depending on the light and season, the lake changes shades from pale pink to deeper rose tones, creating a landscape unlike almost anything else in Serbia. At sunset, the reflections across the surface make the entire place feel surreal.

Prerasti of Eastern Serbia – Natural Stone Bridges Hidden in the Forest

Scattered through the forests of eastern Serbia are enormous natural stone arches known as prerasti. Created over centuries by the force of rivers cutting through rock, these formations feel ancient and almost forgotten by the modern world.

Combined with rivers, dense greenery, and isolated surroundings, they create some of the country’s most unusual landscapes – especially in spring, when nature completely surrounds the stone formations.

Serbia is often associated with traditions, history, and mountain landscapes. But beyond those familiar images lies another side of the country – one filled with surreal springs, hidden waterfalls, turquoise rivers, mysterious rock formations, and places that feel unexpectedly exotic.

Places that seem almost impossible to find in the middle of the Balkans.
