Every year in late May, the small town of Kučevo, in the heart of Homolje, transforms into a vibrant stage of tradition. Streets fill with hundreds of participants dressed in traditional costumes, the sounds of authentic folk music echo through the town, the aromas of homemade food spread through the air, and ancient customs come back to life before visitors’ eyes. But Homolje Motifs are more than just a festival – they are a journey through one of Serbia’s most authentic regions.
The story began back in 1968, when a group of people from Homolje came together with one important idea – to preserve the authentic songs, dances, customs, crafts, and way of life of eastern Serbia.
At a time of rapid change, there was a growing fear that much of the region’s rich cultural heritage could disappear or be forgotten. That is how Homolje Motifs were born – as a gathering dedicated to preserving and showcasing the cultural identity of Homolje and eastern Serbia.

More than 58 years later, the event has remained faithful to its original mission while growing into one of Serbia’s most important traditional festivals, bringing together cultural groups, folk performers, artisans, and visitors from across the country and beyond.
What makes Homolje Motifs truly special is the fact that tradition here is not simply performed – it is genuinely lived.
During the festival, Kučevo becomes a place where visitors can experience grand folk parades, performances by traditional dance ensembles, and concerts of authentic folk music deeply rooted in eastern Serbia’s heritage. Streets and squares come alive with people dressed in beautifully preserved traditional costumes, while visitors can discover old crafts, customs, and everyday traditions once deeply woven into life in Homolje.

The atmosphere is made even more special by the participants themselves – hundreds of people of all generations proudly preserving traditions passed down from one generation to the next.
For many visitors, this authenticity is what makes the festival unforgettable – it feels less like a staged performance and more like stepping into the living soul of a region.
One of the most unusual attractions of Homoljski Motifs is the traditional art of walking on stilts, an old skill passed down through generations in Homolje.
This fascinating tradition was once believed to have had a practical purpose, helping locals navigate difficult and marshy terrain. Today, it remains one of the symbols of Homolje and a rare sight that few places still preserve.

When participants confidently walk through Kučevo on towering stilts, it becomes easy to understand why this spectacle attracts so much attention every year.
Few people know that the Pek River has long been famous for its gold deposits, which is why Homolje Motifs continue another fascinating tradition – gold panning demonstrations.
Since Roman times, this region of eastern Serbia has been connected with precious metals. The Romans actively searched for gold here, leaving traces of mining traditions that remain part of local history today. During the festival, visitors can watch demonstrations of traditional gold panning using an “ispitak”, just as people once did along the banks of the Pek River centuries ago.

And perhaps the thought that the Pek River may still hide traces of gold adds a little extra magic to the experience.
To truly understand Homolje Motifs, you first need to understand Homolje itself – a region that feels beautifully untouched by time. Surrounded by mountains, forests, rivers, and dramatic landscapes, Homolje remained naturally isolated for centuries, helping preserve its customs, music, traditions, and way of life. Many consider it one of the most authentic regions in Serbia.

Here, visitors discover pristine landscapes, hidden viewpoints, caves, and villages where traditional lifestyles are still alive. Homolje is also known for its gastronomy and local specialties, especially the famous Homolje honey, one of the region’s best-known products.
Adding to its mystique are local legends, Vlach traditions, and the sense of wilderness that eastern Serbia has preserved better than many other parts of the country.
Visiting Kučevo during Homolje Motifs is also a great opportunity to explore some of the most beautiful places in Homolje and eastern Serbia.
Nearby attractions include Ceremošnja Cave, known for its impressive cave formations, and Ravništarka Cave, one of the region’s hidden underground gems. Nature lovers often combine their visit with Krupaj Spring, one of Serbia’s most stunning natural springs, as well as the peaceful landscapes of the Homolje Mountains.

The surrounding villages and rural households also offer the chance to enjoy authentic eastern Serbian cuisine, from local cheeses and honey to traditional homemade dishes.
Because this is much more than another festival on the calendar. Homolje Motifs offer a rare chance to experience Serbia as it once was – authentic, deeply rooted in tradition, and closely connected to its heritage. Here, tradition is not staged for visitors; it remains a living part of everyday life.
If you want to discover eastern Serbia differently, late May in Kučevo may be the perfect time to experience the spirit of Homolje.
