Government aid to citizens affected by recent floods will be disbursed from as early as next week, Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said Tuesday, announcing that the state of emergency declared due to the floods will be lifted later in the day.

The damage assessment commissions will complete their reports by the end of the week, Vucic said in Obrenovac.

The aid will be proportionally higher than that in the wake of the May 2014 floods, since a smaller territory has been flooded, he said.

After visiting a reconstructed flood embankment in a village near Obrenovac, Vucic told residents that they will no longer need to fear about rivers overflowing as five dams and reservoirs will be built to provide sufficient protection from floods.

Vucic thanked all who contributed to protecting human lives and property during the recent floods.
