Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic got off to a good start at the Australian Open, beating Slovenia’s Polona Hercog, and Australia’s Tammi Patterson, respectively, in the first round.

Jankovic celebrated 6-3, 6-3 in a match full of breaks of serve and set up a second round meeting with Germany’s Laura Siegemund.

Ivanovic had less work to do with Patterson, in what was her first, 6-2, 6-3, triumph of the season.

Ivanovic will next meet Latvian qualifier Anastasia Sevastova, who marched into second round after her opponent, Australia’s Jarmila Wolfe, retired while trailing by a set and a break at 6-0, 4-2.

The total prize money for the Australian Open is USD 44 million.
