The cultural connection between Serbia and the United States is about to take an exciting turn through the innovative project “Rakija & Rum Road.” This collaboration, blending music, tradition, and craftsmanship, underscores the growing partnership between the Nišville Jazz Festival and the New Orleans Jazz Museum.
Nišville Director Ivan Blagojević and Jelena Ivanjac, the festival’s representative in the U.S., have been invited as VIP guests to the grand gala of the New Orleans Jazz Museum on December 7th. This annual event, a highlight of Louisiana’s cultural calendar, gathers consular representatives, cultural workers, politicians, and prominent business leaders.
With millions of dollars raised for educational programs and projects, the gala symbolizes the museum’s dedication to fostering artistic and educational growth.
One of the key discussions between Blagojević and Greg Lambousy, the museum’s director, will center around the development of the “Rakija & Rum Road” project. This unique initiative aims to bring together 10 musicians and actors from Serbia and the U.S. for a cultural and artistic exchange. The project’s highlights include:
According to Blagojević, this project represents a deep cultural exchange, intertwining musical heritage and traditional craftsmanship in a way that has never been done before.
The collaboration builds on years of partnership between the two institutions, marked by previous visits from Lambousy and his team to the Nišville Festival. Another key figure in the project is Kathu Randels, Artistic Director of Art Production, who performed at the Nišville Jazz Theatre in 2018. Together, they aim to bring this ambitious vision to life.
The December 7th gala will feature performances from renowned artists and bands, including Cimafunk, Wanda Rouzan & A Taste of New Orleans, and Little Freddie King. Guests will pay premium ticket prices, contributing to the museum’s mission. The event will also host auctions of unique products and experiences, such as a private dinner and tour of the museum with Lambousy, raising additional funds.
On December 6th, the day before the gala, international delegates will enjoy an exclusive program at the iconic Snug Harbor jazz club, further enriching their cultural experience.
The “Rakija & Rum Road” project epitomizes the spirit of global collaboration, combining the best of Serbian and Louisiana traditions. By blending music, craft, and cultural heritage, it promises to create a unique platform for artistic innovation and mutual understanding, strengthening the bond between Niš and New Orleans.
