Biking by Danube, skipping classes to hang out at Kalemegdan fortress, watching the sunset from Gardoš tower, and strolling though Knez Mihailova street in the evenings was part of our daily lives growing up in Belgrade. It wasn’t until I moved away that I realized we had taken it all for granted, and started appreciating the history, architecture and breathtaking landscapes that make Belgrade one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.
I moved to USA from Belgrade seven years ago, and in the meantime took up photography as a career. And after years of telling myself that next time I visit home I need to take some pictures, this past fall I finally did, and it was one of the most magical experiences to pretend to be a tourist in my hometown. Since I moved away, Belgrade got a new bridge, new Avala tower, and new graffiti that decorate the buildings in the old town. But its soul is the same – it is still the city where friendships are made by sipping coffees in “kafići“, maintained by partying together at “splavovi” and turned into love stories while watching colorful sunsets from Kalemegdan fortress. Every time I visit, Belgrade steals my heart all over again, and I hope with this photo gallery it steals a piece of yours as well.
