Pope Francis is very interested in resolving the issue of the canonization of Croatian Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac, Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Littoral Amfilohije told Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) late on Monday.

Metropolitan Amfilohije was in a delegation of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) that handed the Pope a response by Serbian Patriarch Irinej to his letter of last year in connection with the canonization of Stepinac.

The Patriarch’s response provides for setting up a mixed commission to discuss the issue, and the SPC expects the Vatican to be actively involved.

Asked if by any chance the contentious issue between the two churches might be resolved any time soon, Amfilohije said that “they have listened to everything with full attention and now we expect them to prepare a proposal for their mixed commission.
