Serbia’s plan is to become a part of the EU by 2020, rather than a part of an alliance of former Soviet republics, says Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Zorana Mihajlovic.

Serbia needs to maintain good relations with everyone, including the Russian Federation, she said, noting that some EU member states perhaps have even better relations with Russia than Serbia does.

The Serbian government is united on this issue and everything that has been done over the past year was done on the EU path, she told Radio Free Europe.

Mihajlovic noted that no one is requesting that Serbia recognise Kosovo as an independent state and that a normalisation of relations does not mean a recognition.

“I believe that we can close all (negotiation) chapters in 2019. It is all up to us now,” Mihajlovic said.
