Justice and defence ministers Nikola Selakovic and Bratislav Gasic travelled to The Hague to accompany him on the trip to Nis, where he was welcomed by Minister of Social and Veteran Affairs Aleksandar Vulin, Serbian Armed Forces Chief of Staff Ljubisa Dikovic and many citizens.
Lazarevic surrendered voluntarily to the ICTY in 2005 – after four years, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison for Kosovo war crimes on command responsibility grounds but the sentence was reduced to 14 years following an appeal.
He was the commander of the Pristina Corps during the 1998-1999 Kosovo conflict and later the commander of the YA Third Army.
