The EU’s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini agreed on Wednesday to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the margins of the OSCE Ministerial Council meeting in Belgrade next week to discuss the pressing issues and fight against terrorism.

In a phone conversation, Mogherini conveyed to Lavrov her condolences for the soldier killed on Tuesday in the shoot-down of a Russian jet plane, the EEAS said in a release.

She also underlined the importance of joining forces in the fight against Daesh and coordinating the efforts.

Mogherini and Lavrov agreed on the need to safeguard the diplomatic track for the Syrian crisis opened in Vienna, and to proceed with the agreed timeline decided at the last meeting of the International Syria Support Group, that would constitute the most effective basis for effectively defeating Daesh on the ground.
