Serbia is a small country that gave birth to and nourished many great champions.

Serbian athletes are famous for their unbreakable spirit, stamina, perseverance, and their patriotic love towards the country for which they shed blood, sweat and tears. Talent and patriotism resulted in plenty of medals won in all major sporting events.

Serbian athletes have often trained in more than poor conditions and they lacked the necessary financial resources, but despite everything, they came out as worldwide champions. Serbian people have always cheered them on while somewhere in the world they were defending the colors of the once Yugoslavian and now Serbian flag. So, they would become national heroes, role models for generations who welcomed them by chanting their names frantically in front of the Belgrade Assembly.

According to the research of the Italian newspaper “Gazzetta dello Sport” in 2007, the Serbs were the most successful nation in Europe in the last 17 years considering team sports, based on the number of the Olympics, and the World and European Championships. The most popular team sports in Serbia are basketball, water polo, volleyball, handball and football.

Thanks to its successful tennis players, and of course the best tennis player in the world, Novak Đoković, tennis became a favorite sport in Serbia. Besides tennis, Serbian athletes are very successful in athletics, archery, wrestling and taekwondo.

Sportsmanship had always played an important part in Serbia, and even in the times when country was falling apart, sport was appreciated and followed, and athletes had been leaving their hearts on the field, becoming national heroes who had forever bound the title of a “sports nation” to our name. Therefore they enjoy a rightfully deserved and very special place on our website.
