When it comes to traditional Serbian cakes, Vasa’s Cake (Vasina torta) reigns supreme. Created back in 1908, this lavish dessert has become a timeless symbol of Serbian hospitality, warmth, and love expressed through food. It’s more than a recipe – it’s a story about gratitude and family that has lived on for generations.

According to the story, the cake was created as a gesture of gratitude from a mother-in-law to her son-in-law, Vasa Čokrljan from Paraćin. When Vasa’s wife, Jelena, became pregnant, doctors warned that the delivery might endanger both her and the baby.

Deeply concerned, Vasa took his wife to Vienna to be treated by the best doctors of the time. Thanks to his care and dedication, Jelena gave birth to a healthy and strong child.

In gratitude for his love and courage, the mother-in-law baked a special cake and named it after him – Vasa’s Cake.
