Outgoing US Ambassador to Serbia Michael Kirby on Thursday handed over to the Serbian Red Cross a donation of items and equipment that will help address the needs of refugees and migrants in Serbia.

The donation – the first of two shipments worth a total US 665,000 – includes heaters, tents, mattresses and other items intended to help migrants, refugees and aid workers in Serbia respond to the challenges posed by winter conditions.

Speaking to reporters at a Red Cross warehouse in Zemun, Belgrade, Kirby noted the significance of four 30 kW generators and 165 garbage cans – which are also part of the donation – as the generators will provide lighting and electricity inside tents and because “keeping a place clean also cuts down on disease.”

The donation is provided by the US Department of Defence through the US European Command and the US Embassy in Belgrade.

The donation also includes towels, foldable tables and chairs, prams and cots, blankets, 400 sleeping bags, etc.
