The very beginning of New Year has brought to Serbia the long awaited snow, magical winter days, but also very interesting manifestations that you simply cannot miss! From the historical sport, celebration of Serbian New Year, the most delicious traditional specialties, to the unique film festival – January offers you interesting and unforgettable time! Enjoy!

1. European Water Polo Championship (January 10-23)

Lovers of Water Polo, sport and exciting sport competitions, be happy! You have plenty of reasons for that, because the biggest European competition ever held will be opened at Belgrade “Arena” on Sunday. Namely, for the first time, 16 national teams will be competing in men’s and 12 teams in women’s category. The audience in “Arena” will have the opportunity to enjoy even 100 games – 56 men’s and 44 women’s matches.

During one of the most important sport events in 2016, the two prefabricated pools will be installed in Belgrade “Arena” – the competitive one dimensions: 34×21 and the warm-up pool dimensions: 25×15. Of course, a great number of visitors from Serbia and abroad are expected, as well as a lot of quality sport and seething cheering atmosphere. For these reasons, you shouldn’t miss on being a part of this spectacular event!

2. Celebration of Serbian New Year (January 13-14)

In case you didn’t know, people in Serbia celebrate two New Years. One celebrated on the 31st of December and the other one, also called “a small Christmas”, Orthodox or Serbian New Year! According to the Julian calendar, this date is marked as a start of the New Year, which is being traditionally celebrated all around the world by Serbian people. With the sounds of trumpet, harmonica and firework displays, people are partying at the city squares, in their homes, restaurants, kafanas

The unforgettable celebration is being expected at the city square in Novi Sad where Goran Bregović will perform alongside the Zorule ansamble and Slovenian musician Magnifico. Amazing party is announced at the Niš city square, at Zlatibor, but also in some smaller cities around Serbia. The celebration of Serbian New Year is the event to remember, and a great way of meeting the tourists with Serbian spirit, culture and tradition!

3. Pršutijada in Mačkat (January 15-17)

Pršuta, bacon, sausages, čvarci, roast, cheese, but also many other traditional specialties are awaiting you at the 16th Fair of Cured Meat Products, also known as “Pršutijada”. Over 10.000 people who enjoy the taste, scent and a variety of quality cured meat products are thrilled about this well-known gastronomic manifestation.

The fair gets its international character for the first time, because participation of exhibitors from Austria, Croatia and Slovenia is planned. There is no lack in tasty home-made products for sure, but also in interesting cultural, music and educational program. Besides that, contests for the best pršuta, bacon and sausage are also famous, so the excitement and uncertainty are always present. So, come here, taste the tradition and be convinced in the quality of Serbian home-made products. 

4. Kustendorf (January 22-27)

Starting from 2008, one of the best film and music festivals in Europe – Kustendorf, is been held in the magical ethno village Drvengrad. Because of this unique International festival, year after year, Mokra Gora represents the meeting point of a large number of young authors from all around the world, and this year, that number will get to 17. A founder of the festival Emir Kusturica and his daughter Dunja are traditionally taking care of selection of the artistic achievements.

Kustendorf

The famous magazine “MovieMaker” said that Kustendorf, which was imagined as a gathering place for the great names of modern film, but also the students and young creators in the first place, was “the most relaxed movie and music festival in Europe”. If you haven’t had a chance to attend this one-of-a-kind manifestation, don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy the quality music, films and all that in the presence of the contemporary film’s greats.

5. Days of the Dance (January 27-31)

For the third time in a row, the audience will have the opportunity to see the premiere screenings of the multiply awarded documentary and artistic movies at the movie show named “Days of the Dance”. This unique manifestation is a real treat for the lovers of movie, music, dance and art, who will have a chance to enjoy its jewels in the Yugoslav Film Archive.

The manifestation will be opened with the movie “Ballerina” directed by Bertrando Norman, and a documentary about the extraordinary success of Israeli contemporary dance called “Let’s dance” is impatiently expected. During the days of the festival, audience will enjoy the projections of the following movies: “The Life of Yvonne Rainer”, “My Madness is My Love”, “First position”, “Between Entrance and Exit”, etc.
