When spring arrives to Serbia, everything and everyone seems to get a spring (get it?) in their step! This is why April is the best time to put on some light clothes and a smile, and head for some of nature’s heavenly spots. There are plenty of them in Serbia! From fascinating mountains, relaxing spa retreats to beautiful lakes and a plethora of green parks. We know, we know… it isn’t exactly an easy choice!
But when you pick your ideal destination, all that remains is to choose a sports activity. Don’t try to avoid it, trust us – you’ll enjoy it! Cycling, rollerblading, walking or one of the multitude of outdoor sports activities are practically invented for this time of the year. And if you still haven’t opted for your recreational adventure, you can find some awesome ideas here.
Talking about sports and outdoor activities, we simply can’t omit the famous Belgrade marathon! In time, this sports event became more than a simple race through the Serbian capital. This year, the 29th marathon will be a special one! A record number of runners is expected, and they can choose whether they want to run the full marathon, the half marathon or the 5km Fun Run.
All participants receive a diploma and a medal, and the millionth contestant receives a silver trophy. The thing that never changes about the marathon is the positive energy and fun that fills the streets of Belgrade during the run. So why not be a part of this joyful event and discover why the Belgrade marathon is one of the most popular spring manifestations!
Imagine resting and relaxing in the same place where the Romans treated their legionnaires 2,000 years ago. Or enjoying the climate spas which are completely free of any air pollutants. We have good news for you – in Serbia you can! Most of the spa retreats have thermal sources centuries old, and the spas are true ecological oases.
The best part is that spring is the ideal time to visit some of these retreats. The choice is huge! You have the Vrnjačka, Prolom, Niška, Koviljača, Bukovička, Selters and Sokobanja spa. You can’t go wrong whichever one you choose. After a day of recreation in nature, a little spa down time will certainly do you good. Enjoy!
The month of April is perfect for trying out traditional Serbian specialties and enjoying the times spent in old households located near river shores. The best known “čarde” (traditional taverns by rivers) are those by the Danube, the best “salaši” (a kind of farmsteads) are those in the plains of Vojvodina, and the best ethno villages… Well, they’re scattered all across Serbia and every single one is special in its own way.
Whether you prefer fish specialties or traditional Serbian cuisine, the sound of “tamburica” (a long-necked lute) or “harmonika” (an accordion), here you’ll find what you need. We guarantee it!
And truly, there is nothing better than spending a sunny day in one of these places which are so typical for Serbia. Being in such an authentic environment characterised by old households surrounded by fascinating nature, animals and objects 200-years-old is a unique experience. We won’t even mention the homemade food, rakija and wine. Relax and revel in the true spirit of Serbia!
As soon as spring arrives, and with it the warm, sunny days, a desire to enjoy the beauty of a river, lake or waterfall arrives as well. Even though it’s too early to bathe or swim in them (kudos for those who already can), rivers and lakes can be the perfect places to rest, engage in some outdoor activity, go fishing or enjoy lovely landscapes. The only question is whether you prefer calm lowland rivers or an extreme adventure on mountain rapids.
Our recommendation is to spend the first days of spring by a quiet lake or river, marveling at the view and all that nature can give you. Ada Ciganlija, the Palićko, Vlasinsko and Ludaško lake, as well as the Danube, the Sava, Morava and Drina river, are some of the great choices you can make. And let’s not forget the Sopotnica, Tupavica and Veliki buk waterfalls. It’s up to you to choose, and remember this is only one of the things you shouldn’t miss doing in April!
