Christmas in Serbia is a day when homes open wide – for family, friends, warm wishes, and traditions carefully passed down through generations. It is a holiday measured not by hours, but by a deep sense of belonging and the warmth that fills the house from morning until evening.
The day begins with the arrival of the položajnik, the first guest to step into the home on Christmas Day. His visit is believed to bring good fortune, health, and prosperity. As he stirs the fire and sparks begin to rise, wishes are spoken aloud – for a fruitful year, a strong household, and peace within the family. Those sparks are more than fire; they are symbols of hope for the year ahead.
At the heart of Christmas morning is the česnica, a special bread around which the family gathers. Prepared with care, it hides a coin, grains of wheat, and sometimes a sprig of cornelian cherry, each carrying its own meaning. The bread is not cut but broken by hand, a moment filled with smiles and anticipation, as everyone searches for a sign of good fortune in the year to come.

The house is filled with the scent of candles, incense, and a festive table. Dishes prepared especially for the occasion follow one another – roasted meats, traditional breads, homemade cakes, and local drinks. Yet Christmas is not found in abundance, but in togetherness: in unhurried conversations, shared memories, and the simple joy of being present.
Throughout the day, guests arrive, and greetings are exchanged – brief, heartfelt, and meaningful:
“Mir Božji, Hristos se rodi! (Peace of God, Christ is Born),” accompanied by a smile, a warm embrace, and wishes for gentler and brighter days ahead. Christmas is a time to renew bonds, to forgive, and to invite good energy and faith into the home.

As evening falls, the house settles into calm. The candle still burns, voices soften, and a feeling of gratitude lingers. Christmas slowly completes its circle, leaving behind what matters most – peace in the heart and the belief that the best things are always born from simplicity and togetherness.
Peace of God, Christ is Born!
May Christmas bring you health, joy, and the warmth of home – today and throughout the year.
