The waterfalls in Serbia are usually located in hidden, often unexplored and mysterious places that aren’t easily accessible. These natural phenomena are usually connected with some interesting and mystical tales of the local people. In ancient tales that are passed on from generation to generation, these locations are mentioned as places where the fairies and elves gathered, places with unnatural phenomena and where magical events occurred.
Even though there are a great number of various waterfalls in Serbia, not much is known about them, and some of them, like Kaluđerski skokovi, have only recently been introduced to the public. Serbian mountains are full of these natural formations, which is supported by the fact that there are as many as 30 different discovered waterfalls on the Stara planina. Within the Kučaj and Homolje mountains there are about ten waterfalls, however we shouldn’t forget to mention the waterfalls on Pešter, Miroč, Fruška gora, Svrljig mountains, in the vicinity of Ljig, Tara, and Rudnik.
The waterfall Kaluđerski skokovi is the largest cascade waterfall in Serbia that was discovered in 2012 thanks to Dragovan Stojadinović Šule. This truly impressive natural hydrographical object starts at an altitude of 1554 meters a.s.l. and descends over about 20 cascades of various sizes to the height of 1322 meters a.s.l.
Although Serbian waterfalls aren’t as great or as gracious as the other world famous waterfalls, these natural creations, often hidden in the intact nature, captivate the beholder with their peculiarity, mystique, and the ravishing beauty. It is only when the snows start melting and huge amounts of water gush down the waterfall, can you see them in their full glory and realize the power of these natural phenomena.

If you wish to acquaint yourself with the wild areas of our country and encounter the waterfalls that even many locals don’t know about, the best guide for you is the recently published book “The Waterfalls of Serbia” by Dragovan Stojadinović Šule. The author of this unique, comprehensive book nearly 10 years ago decided to explore different locations of our country with a camera in his hand and make a unique atlas of the waterfalls in Serbia.
With the scanty books, thanks to the local people and the internet, in eight years, with many sacrifices, hard work and patience, he managed to, more or less, find all the waterfalls, visit them and take a picture. In that time, using a terrain vehicle or by hiking, he crossed thousands of kilometers through the canyons, wilderness, and the least accessible locations throughout Serbia. This book, that has systematic depictions, locations, main characteristics, genetic conditions of the formation, and the possibilities of visiting the waterfall, is a real treasure that simply urges you to explore the unknown terrains and visit the magical sights of these hidden natural creations.
The author himself states that he hopes this book becomes the driving force for all those who enjoy nature and aim to familiarize themselves with the impressive sights and miraculous environment of the waterfalls of Serbia. Still, he emphasizes that it is important to know that the waterfalls are especially sensitive to changes. This is why he stresses: “Observe them, admire them, take photographs and rest beside them, but leave them in their beauty so that the generations to come can admire them as well.”
