Tucked away in the southeastern part of Zlatibor, high on the untouched slopes of Mount Murtenica, lies Tavničko Lake – a peaceful, turquoise mirror surrounded by cliffs and silence. Far from crowds, and unknown to most tourists, this lake is one of Serbia’s best-kept secrets.

📍 Location and Access

Tavničko Lake is located in the village of Draglica, in the municipality of Nova Varoš, around 24 km from the center of Zlatibor. Positioned at an altitude of about 1,000 meters, this hidden gem lies within the vast Murtenica mountain massif – the most expansive part of Zlatibor.

Reaching the lake requires a bit of effort – the final stretch involves rough terrain, so it’s best accessed with a 4×4 vehicle or on foot for adventurous hikers.

A Lake Born in a Forgotten Mine

What makes Tavničko Lake unique is its origin and color. It was formed over 30 years ago in a former magnesite open-pit mine. Once mining operations ceased, mountain springs quickly flooded the site, giving birth to this naturally framed lake with crystal-clear, turquoise water.

The lake is about 70 meters long, 40 meters wide, with a maximum depth of 8 meters, and is fed by two permanent freshwater springs.

Swimming Beneath Cliffs

Tavničko Lake isn’t a tourist resort. You won’t find cafes, decks, or signs here — only pure mountain silence, cold water, and wild beauty.

Thanks to the steep cliffs surrounding it, the lake is protected from wind and waves, making it surprisingly pleasant for swimming in summer months. Access to the water is limited to a few natural entry points, which helps preserve the site’s untouched feel.

Fishing? No, Just Watching

Although the lake has been stocked with fish, fishing is not allowed, due to the low population of aquatic life. The fish are here to support the ecosystem — not to be caught.

Instead, Tavničko Lake is perfect for:

  • Nature lovers and landscape photographers
  • Mountain swimmers and wild swimmers
  • Hikers looking for a resting point
  • Eco-tourists and solitude seekers
  • Quiet picnics in raw, scenic surroundings

Before You Go…

  • Bring your own water, snacks, and proper hiking shoes
  • There is no mobile signal, no stores, no noise — and that’s the beauty
  • Do not leave trash behind
  • Be cautious near the cliffs and water’s edge

🧭 What’s Nearby?

Combine your visit to the lake with exploration of:

  • Mount Murtenica’s hiking trails
  • Zlatar and Uvac Lake, if heading southwest
  • Zlatibor center, for wellness or accommodation
  • Drmanović’s Cross Viewpoint, with breathtaking vistas

Why Visit?

Because silence, height, and color still matter. Tavničko Lake is not on brochures — it’s in whispered recommendations between nature lovers. It doesn’t ask for attention, but it deserves it.

If you’re looking for a hidden place on Zlatibor that most people don’t know about — now you do.
