The provincial assembly in Pristina elected Hasim Taci, leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (DPK), as new Kosovo president in the third round of voting on Friday.

Among those voting for Taci were the Serb list MPs, and the new president, in his first address in parliament after the vote, voiced a special appreciation for the support.

Taci was elected president of Kosovo by a secret third round ballot, winning 71 votes, while needing a simple majority of minimum 61 votes.

Taci failed to muster the necessary 80 votes in the previous two rounds.

Today’s assembly session to elect the Kosovo president was disrupted by opposition Self-Determination MPs releasing tear gas canisters two times during the vote.
