The practice of over 700 public enterprises generating dozens of billions of dinars of losses every year cannot be stopped with one law alone, Serbian Minister of Economy Zeljko Sertic said Tuesday.

Sertic told the RTS that the new law on public enterprises will regulate the operation of 37 national and 691 local companies.

“The entire package of measures that we have been implementing for more than a year has brought significant progress. We have identified irregularities in the implementation of the previous law and decided that social policy should no longer be pursued at the expense of public enterprises,” Sertic said.

“It is important that we professionalise public enterprises,” the minister said, announcing a new selection of directors for this year.
