A Serbian national was kidnapped in Libya on Saturday, April 23, Belgrade-based daily Vecernje Novosti reported in its Tuesday issue.

The daily obtained the information from Serbia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The ministry said they were in constant contact with the Libyan authorities, doing everything to have the situation resolved and help Miroslav Tomic (36) be freed as soon as possible, Vecernje Novosti said.

The daily said that Tomic, who works in oil fields 1,200km from Tripoli, was kidnapped during a visit to an oil well owned by a Libyan oil company.

Since the oil well is located in a zone of conflict, it is assumed that the abduction was carrried out by local criminal groups to demand ransom.

A search for Tomic was started immediately after his disappearance had been reported.

Tomic has been living and working in Libya for the past 20 years and has been employed by Ferrostaal, a German industrial services provider, and was the only Serb on a team in charge of maintaining oil platform piping.

Vecernje Novosti report that Tomic, whose family live in the village of Brasina near Mali Zvornik in western Serbia, was in Serbia until three weeks ago and that he planned to return to Serbia in July to go on a vacation with his wife and two teenage sons.

The last person to hear from him was a friend of his, who also lives and works in Libya, on the day before the kidnapping, Vecernje Novosti said.
