Serbia is celebrating is Statehood Day on Monday, commemorating the holiday of Sretenje (Orthodox Church Candlemas) of 1804, when it started a revolution to free the country of Turkish rule, and the same date in 1835, when it passed its first modern Constitution, with a series of events on Monday.
On the occasion of Statehood Day, Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic laid a wreath at the Monument to the Unknown Hero on Mount Avala, south of Belgrade.
Nikolic also awarded medals to individuals, institutions and members of the Ministry of Defense and the Serbian Armed Forces and organized a reception at the building of the General Secretariat of the President of the Republic of Serbia in Belgrade.
As part of the celebrations, Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic is attending a “solemn academy” in Kragujevac, while Minister for Labor, Employment and Social Policy Aleksandar Vulin will lead a state ceremony commemorating the national holiday at St. George’s Church in Oplenac near Topola.
