Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic on Friday laid a wreath at the Monument to the Unknown Hero on Mt. Avala near Belgrade in commemoration of the Veterans Day.

“When you chose between Serbia and life, you chose Serbia and life for those who were yet to be born. Serbia will exist for as long as it has sons like that, it has them today, too. Thank you on behalf of today’s Serbia,” Nikolic wrote in the memorial book.

President Nikolic was accompanied by Defence Minister Bratislav Gasic, Serbian Armed Forces Chief of Staff General Ljubisa Dikovic and Guard Commander Milomir Todorovic.
Veterans Day is commemorated in Serbia for the first time.

The armistice in the First Balkan War was signed on December 4, 1912, when around 400,000 soldiers of the Kingdom of Serbia became “old warriors” – war veterans.
