Serbia and the U.S. both wish peace and stability in the Western Balkans, Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic and outgoing U.S. Ambassador to Serbia Michael Kirby agreed on Tuesday.

Kirby said that relations in the region were now much better than three years before, thanks in great part to new, positive politics pursued by Serbia, which President Nikolic had helped create.

Ambassador Kirby expressed his satisfaction about Serbia’s efforts in tackling the migrant crisis and treating refugees from war-affected areas so humanely, the president’s press office said in a release.

Speaking about relations between Serbia and the U.S., Kirby said that they had improved considerably over the previous three years and Serbia was being seen in America now as a stable and organized country and a good investment destination.

Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic thanked outgoing U.S. Ambassador to Serbia Michael Kirby for playing an active role in improving relations between the U.S. and Serbia.

President Nikolic, who received a farewell visit from Ambasador Kirby on Tuesday, expressed gratitude to Kirby for helping Serbia maintain a good relationship with the U.S. even when disagreements on certain issues showed up occasionally.

Nikolic said that Serbia had decidedly set out on a course to membership of the European Union and had already done a lot in creating a stable and modern system to help attract foreign investment and ensure economic progress.

The opening of the first chapter in accession negotiations is a clear signal to U.S. investors that Serbia is a reliable partner and an investment-safe country, Nikolic said.
