Got a Stopover in Belgrade? Here’s How to Make It Count

You’ve landed in Belgrade, Serbia — and your next flight isn’t for another few hours. Instead of waiting at the airport café, why not step outside and explore one of Europe’s most vibrant and welcoming cities? Belgrade is compact, full of character, and only about 30 minutes away from the airport, making it perfect for a short urban adventure.

Whether you have 3, 5, or 8 hours, here’s how to make the most of your layover in Belgrade.

First Things First: Before You Leave the Airport

  • Visa & entry check: Citizens of the EU, UK, USA, and many other countries can enter Serbia visa-free. Check entry requirements before traveling.
  • Storage: If you have luggage, store it at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (Terminal 2).
  • Transport: Take a taxi or CarGo app — it’s the fastest way to reach the city center (about €25 / 2,600 RSD, 20–25 minutes).
  • Time management:

3–4 Hour Mini Tour: The Core of Belgrade

1. Start at Kalemegdan Fortress – Walk through centuries of history where the Danube meets the Sava. Enjoy views from the Victor Monument, see the Military Museum, or just take in the atmosphere.

2. Stroll Down Knez Mihailova Street – The city’s elegant pedestrian zone, filled with shops, cafés, and street performers.

3. Pause at Republic Square – The cultural heart of Belgrade, home to the National Museum and National Theatre.

Optional break: Grab a quick coffee or sweet treat at Manufaktura or Kafana ? (Question Mark) — both close to your route.

Estimated time: 2.5–3.5 hours including transport to/from airport.

5–6 Hour Plan: Add Local Flavor

After you’ve explored the central core, head to Skadarlija, Belgrade’s bohemian quarter. This cobblestoned street is full of charm — imagine Paris’s Montmartre, but Balkan-style.

Have lunch at Dva Jelena or Tri Šešira, enjoy live traditional music, and taste ćevapi, ajvar, or homemade rakija if you’re not flying soon.

If you have some extra time, take a taxi or CarGo to Saint Sava Temple, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world, and admire its marble-white exterior and glittering mosaics.

Estimated time: 5–6 hours including transfers.

7–8 Hour Plan: The Full Layover Experience

If your layover is long enough, treat yourself to a walk by the water.
From the city center, cross Branko’s Bridge and stroll along the Sava Promenada, part of the new Belgrade Waterfront district. Have dessert or coffee with a river view at Ambar, Comunale, or Kafeterija BW.

If you’re visiting in the evening, stay for sunset — Belgrade’s skyline glowing above the Sava is unforgettable.

Estimated time: 7–8 hours, comfortably including transfers.

Heading Back to the Airport

  • Plan to leave the city at least 1.5–2 hours before your flight.
  • Taxis and ride apps are reliable — CarGo, Yandex, or the official airport taxi stand.
  • The airport is small and efficient; passport control and security usually move quickly.

If You Prefer to Stay Close to the Airport

If you’re short on time (2–3 hours max), there’s no need to rush into the city. You can still enjoy a taste of Serbian culture nearby:

Aviation Museum (Muzej Avijacije) – just 10 minutes from the airport, this museum showcases historic aircraft, aviation memorabilia, and the history of Serbian aviation. Perfect for aviation enthusiasts or a quick cultural stop.
