Women are a major economic potential for Serbia, Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Zorana Mihajlovic said Monday, opening a regional conference on female entrepreneurship.

The year 2016 is a year of entrepreneurship in Serbia, with specific projects planned, Mihajlovic said.

“Over the past two years, the Serbian government has been working on gender equality and economic empowerment of women – 51.6 percent of Serbia’s population are women, they outnumber men. But women are over 20 percent less employed and paid a third less than men,” Mihajlovic said.

The government has earmarked RSD 16 billion for the year of entrepreneurship, and some of the funds will go to female entrepreneurship, she noted.

A large support programme for start-ups will begin on April 20 to help those who only have ideas, as well as those who have just established their companies, Sertic said.

“There is nothing more beautiful than living off your own work,” Sertic said.
