The normalization of Belgrade-Pristina relations implies Kosovo’s UN membership, US Ambassador to Serbia Michael Kirby told daily Vecernje Novosti.

We do not ask of Serbia to recognize Kosovo’s independence. But, it will be up to the EU to define what the normalization would eventually mean. However, from our viewpoint, that includes Kosovo’s UN membership, Kirby said, when asked whether the recognition of the independence of Kosovo-Metohija would be the ultimate condition for Serbia’s EU membership.

Asked whether the demand for Pristina to get a UN seat would be part of the binding agreement that the EU would require from Belgrade at the end of the process of normalization, Kirby said that the binding deal is just one in a series of papers that Belgrade and Pristina would sign.

“You already did that in April 2013 and August 2015,” he noted.
