The UK government has financed the flood repair project focusing on the Kolubara mining complex with around GBP 1 million (EUR 1.3 million), as part of which 24 levees have been restored along the rivers of the Kolubara basin, UK Ambassador Denis Keefe said in Lazarevac on Wednesday.

At the closing of the project, in which Energy Minister Aleksandar Antic also took part, he said that 24 levees had been recovered along the rivers of Kolubara, Pestan, Lukavica and Turija.

Keefe said that less than two years ago, the municipality of Lazarevac had sustained a major damage, as around 300 hectares of land had been flooded and over 500 households affected.

The British diplomat added that 1,100 m of embankment had been damaged as well.

“The project confirms the strength of bilateral relations between Serbia and the UK,” Keefe said.
