Every year, at the beginning of September, the city of Pančevo comes alive with a unique blend of tradition, beer, and history – it’s time for Vajfert Days. This festival is more than just a celebration; it is an opportunity to honor one of Serbia’s most important industrialists, philanthropists, and bankers – Đorđe Vajfert.

Born in Pančevo, Vajfert transformed his family brewery into the largest in the Balkans, but his influence extended far beyond beer: he was a visionary, the first governor of the National Bank, and a patron of the arts.

From September 5 to 7, Vajfert Days bring his legacy to life through a vibrant program – beer tastings, concerts, cultural events, and craft workshops. It is the perfect opportunity to discover the life of a man who shaped modern Serbia while experiencing Pančevo in a truly unique way.

Who Was Đorđe Vajfert?

Đorđe Vajfert (1850–1937) was one of the most important industrialists, philanthropists, and bankers in Serbian history. Born into a German family that settled in Pančevo, Vajfert continued the family’s brewing tradition and transformed it into the largest brewery in the Balkans.

But Vajfert was much more than the “king of beer.” He was also the first governor of the National Bank of Serbia, a man who helped stabilize the country’s economy, a major investor in mining (notably in Bor), and a great patron of the arts. Thanks to his contributions, he is remembered as one of Serbia’s greatest benefactors. Today, his portrait is featured on the 1,000-dinar banknote.
