Famous New York avantgarde theatre LaMaMa is performing in Belgrade on September 13th with the beginning at 20.00, at the hall Americana of Belgrade Youth Center. The entrance is free for all visitors.
On the occasion of the opening of the new-founded Studio – Performing Arts Laboratory within the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade, the famous New York avant-garde theatre – LaMaMa is visiting Belgrade celebrating their 50th anniversary.
The show “La MaMa cantata” is a history of the New York avant-garde scene, presented through the life of one of its main characters – Ellen Stuart.
After the play, on September 14th, artists will organize a workshop with the FDA students. Further on the Studio – Performing Arts Laboratory will organize different projects including international cooperation, seminars and workshops, as well as research projects of the FDA students and the University of Arts.
La MaMa Theater was founded by the legendary Ellen Stewart in 1961 in New York. Her vision of the theatre that supports artists of all nations and cultures still today continues to grow in New York. To date La MaMa Theatre has presented over 3,200 theatre plays and represents a significant part of the New York cultural life, and world as well.
Each year La MaMa produces 50 to 60 plays, most of which are world premieres and include artists from more than 70 countries. They won over 30 Obie awards as well as numerous others significant international and American awards.
La MaMa Theatre is well known for the internationalization of the American avant-garde. Ellen Stewart initiated and supported the creative work of numerous interesting theatre artists, such as Bob Wilson, Tadeusz Kantor and many others, and she also worked with Serbian artists – Slobodanka Ceca Aleksić, Ljubiša Ristić, Ivana Vujić, Sonja Vukićević.
