There are tons of interesting locations in Serbia you could find yourselves at on this day. It could be an outing in the fascinating Serbian outdoors, an interesting afternoon at a “salaš” or a relaxed day on one of Serbia’s magical lakes. Still, one place stands apart…

Whole books have been written, beautiful lyrics and songs have been sung about spring in Serbia… The reason is simple – spring is a season which inspires, breathes life into everything and conjures up a special feeling in our hearts.

Still, every artist struggled to portray the full extent of this magnificent season’s beauty. Serbian nature would always manage to outdo them…

The fact of the matter is that it’s not so easy to describe all these vast landscapes, intoxicating smells and amazing colours which paint the wavy meadows and green pastures of Serbia. It’s especially difficult to do justice to a river valley along which the most beautiful lilacs have been planted. Their almost unreal smell awakens all the senses and bewitches the mind. This is precisely the place where you should be tomorrow.

A magnificent river and a magical valley

We suppose that now you can already guess which destination we’re talking about. The perfect place to enjoy a sunny spring day is the Ibar river and its Valley of lilacs. There are a lot of reasons to spend your Sunday here, but the biggest one is the 23rd cultural and tourism manifestation called the “Days of Lilacs”.

The Valley of lilacs
The Valley of lilacs

This traditional event celebrates one of Serbia’s most beautiful legends of love. According to this legend, during the 13th century King Uroš I decided to plant fragrant lilacs along the whole valley of the Ibar river to show his love for the French princess Helen of Anjou. The Serbian king wanted his beloved to feel at home.

Since then, the Serbian people cherish the memories they have of the French princess and Serbian queen, as well as the friendly relations they’ve established with France. The main manifestation in her honour are the “Days of Lilacs” and it is one you shouldn’t miss! All sorts of different cultural and artistic content, a lot of fun and positive vibes are just a few of the reasons why you have to be here this Sunday!

The mysterious medieval guardian of the Ibar river

A stunning 13th-century fortification is the second but nothing less important reason. The Maglič fortress is located on the very top of the hill, only a 100 m above the gorge formed by the Ibar river. This castle survived countless wars, uprisings and rebellions, and it can thank its inaccessibility for that. As well as the fog. For it got its name because of the fog which often surrounds and hides it.

That is why it is a truly unique and unrepeatable experience to walk the grounds of this monument of Serbian history and culture. And when you add to it the fairy-tale like landscapes that surround it, you’ll realize there’s no better place to spend a Sunday afternoon during springtime!

And last but not the least – the city of seven kings

Your Sunday will not be complete (and perfect) until you visit Kraljevo, a city where seven Serbian medieval kings were crowned. Here, you’ll be met by kind and cheerful host who’ll surely take you on a walk through the interesting streets and into some of the many authentic Serbian “kafanas” of the town referred to as the “heart of Šumadija”.

Don’t miss your opportunity to try some delicacies of traditional Serbian cuisine, or to visit the museums and galleries of Kraljevo. Yes, yes, we’re quite aware that that’s too little time to visit so many interesting destinations and venues. That’s why we recommend that you, if you can of course, spend a couple days more in this part of Serbia. That’ll give you the plenty time to visit the famous Žiča, Studenica and Gradac monasteries, as well as many natural beauties such as the Vrnjačka Banja spa, Mount Goč and the magnificent Morava river.

One thing’s for sure – you’ll remember this trip for a long, long time!
