Čuburski Park which represents a symbol of Vračar municipality for decades, got its new guardian – „The Belgrade reader “.

This sculpture was produced as the civic initiative of writers Gordana Pešaković and Gordana Vlajić and RTS journalist Tanja Šikić, and its author is Andrija Vasiljević.

By unveiling of this sculpture, Belgrade has become one of the numerous cities around the world that own a statue of the Reader, and Vancouver, Kansas City and Washington are among them.

Čuburski Park is settled in of one of favorite Belgrade areas, Čubura. This area once was full of kafanas, which were the meeting points of people from surrounding streets. All that’s left of something that Čubura once was are a few kafanas, and a park which today represents the favorite place for children, sportsmen and the dog owners.

This statue should be representing major changes and leaning toward the return of true values that have been lost somewhere along the way. As they say, it should be a symbol of a young man who reads and who should stay in Serbia to study and get a job here.

„Prince Miloš once brought engineers, doctors and wise men to Serbia and had supported Vuk Stefanović Karadžić in dealing with Serbian language, spelling and the letter, and the monument reminds of that“, said Siniša Mali and expressed satisfaction that the project was realized in a short time.

The goal of this project is to support literature, readership, creativity of the young and a promotion of culture and communication as well.
