A Serbian national who was kindapped in Libya on Saturday has been released, the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Tanjug Wednesday.

“Tomic was released and he will report to his firm tomorrow, and then we will have more information,” the ministry said.

Tomic was kidnapped on a road between Sarir and Messla oil fields, while on the way to carry out his regular work activities, some 1,200km from Tripoli, on Saturday.

He works with Ferrostaal, a German company that supplies and maintains oil pipelines in Libya.

Secretary General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Veljko Odalovic told Radio Television of Serbia this morning that Ferrostaal was waiting to get in contact with Tomic or to see him report at his workplace before they could confirm his liberation.

Odalovic added that the German company had said that the abduction had not been politically motivated and had not been able to confirm that a ransom had been sought, although it was suspected as being the reason for the abduction.

According to earlier media reports, Tomic was not kidnapped in a conflict zone, so it is assumed that the kidnapping was committed by a local criminal group, for the likely reason of asking for ransom.

A search for Tomic was started immediately after his disapearance had been reported.

Tomic has been living in Libya for the past 20 years.
