The family, friends, party colleagues and citizens paid homage to prime minister Zoran Djindjic, who was assassinated 13 years ago, by wreath-laying and candle-lighting at his grave in the Alley of the Greats in New Belgrade on Saturday.

The widow of the late prime minister, Ruzica Djindjic, laid flowers at his grave together with their son Luka.

Leader of the Democratic Party (DS) Bojan Pajtic and party officials also honoured the memory of  Djindjic.

LDP, SDS mark anniversary of Djindjic’s assassination

The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the Social Democratic Party (SDS) took on Saturday a traditional “walk for Zoran” to the Serbian government building where they laid wreaths and lit candles in memory of prime minister Zoran Djindjic, who was assassinated 13 years ago.

The LDP and SDS leaders, Cedomir Jovanovic and Boris Tadic respectively, led the column of walkers.

“Zoran’s idea was an idea of life. He had energy, courage. His fight was a fight for life, and if we give up on this, there will no future for this country,“ Tadic said.

Zivkovic: Serbia needs new path

Members of the Djindjic-led government paid tribute on Saturday to their late prime minister, who was assassinated on March 12, 2003, by wreath-laying and candle-lighting in the courtyard of the government building.

The former prime minister, now leader of the New Party, Zoran Zivkovic told reporters that 13 years ago, Serbia had lost a great reformer, describing this as an irrecoverable loss, as “no one could possibly replace Djindjic“.

In about two months’ time, citizens will have an opportunity to pick a new path in the general elections, the path of Zoran Djindjic, Zivkovic said.
