Vast lands as far as the eye can see, picturesque scenery of a thousand colours, luscious nature that can’t help itself but inspire everyone who sets eyes on it, and a spirit which sets off an avalanche of emotions. Sounds rather unreal, doesn’t it? It did to us anyway, until we visited these 7 lookouts and discovered the most impressive and fascinating landscapes Serbia has to offer. Enjoy!

1. Molitva and her winding meanders

At first glance one would think this place must be a work of art of a truly skilled artist. But it is not. It is, in fact, very real. Most of you will agree that it is not often that we have the opportunity to enjoy in simply intoxicating scents nor to be engulfed in rich nature or the sight of winding meanders. Wait, the sight of winding what? Winding meanders – a very rare bend of a watercourse carved brilliantly by Mother Nature.

Precisely because of this fascinating view of the Uvac river canyon and this very rare natural occurrence, Molitva bears the title of one of the most beautiful panoramic spots in Serbia. And if you’re very lucky, you just might get to feast your eyes upon another unusual sight – the flight of a griffon vulture. So, what are you waiting for? Invite a couple of friends and head straight to the Zlatibor region and let this overlook steal your breath away.

2. Banjska stena and the emerald Perućac

Many nature admirers can’t agree on one thing: who deserves the title of the most beautiful Serbian viewpoint – Banjska stena or Molitva? We’ll simply stick to that old saying ’’Tastes differ’’ and tell you that both of these panoramic spots are well-worth visiting. Like Molitva grants an exceptional view of the Uvac meanders, so does Banjska stena provide a spectacular overlook of the emerald lake of Perućac and the beautiful nature surrounding it.

This vista point is located on one of the most beautiful Serbian mountains – Tara, which is also an immensely important National park. This is yet another reason to come here because the beauty of Tara will ensure that the sights along on your way to the panoramic spot will be as fascinating as the lookout itself. We would also like to strongly recommend taking a dip in the crystal clear waters of the surrounding lakes of Perućac or Zaovine, should you find yourself here during summer.

3. From Ovčar and Kablar

Another exceptional lookout is located only a couple of kilometers from Čačak and is known by the name of Srpska Sveta Gora. No need to have a second guess! We’re talking about the Ovčarsko-Kablarska gorge, a spectacular natural monument with no less than 16 Serbian monasteries on its territory. And that’s not the only thing that makes these mountains so special. They provide you with views you simply won’t want to part from!

This is only one of those viewpoints. If you wish to see the rest and bear witness to their beauty, hit the road (to Šumadija, of course!). You will be greeted not only by the aforementioned, which would be enough on its own, but by polite and smiling hosts, proper traditional Serbian cuisine and the authentic rock’n’roll of Šumadija.

4. A million dollar worth view

In order to reach the unique lookout of the Danube’s Iron Gate, you’ll have to put in a bit of effort. Nonetheless, when you reach the top, you’ll see that the view was well worth the effort. Your reward will be a view worth a million dollars. Add to that the smell of the Danube, spread by unrelenting wind, and you will be overwhelmed with a sense of peace and quiet which refresh the mind and warm the heart.

The landscape seen from this panoramic spot will assure you that the climb was “worth the trouble”. Here you will have the opportunity to meet Serbia’s most staggering gorge and its abundant flora and fauna, as well as its rich cultural heritage. This unique mix made the Đerdap gorge the biggest natural and archeological museum in the whole of Europe. Don’t miss it!

5. An adrenaline-packed adventure

Adventurers, this one is for you! There is an awesome way to get your adrenaline pumping and its name is Lazar’s canyon. Try to tame the wild nature of the deepest and longest canyon of eastern Serbia. This quest to conquer this steep and rocky canyon is also your chance to come “face to face” with one of Serbia’s most magnificent lookouts.

However, we have to mention that this canyon is pretty inaccessible and therefore you’ll need appropriate equipment for the complete climbing experience. And, if you lack experience in climbing, then you’ll need a good guide as well. But we can all agree that all good things require a certain amount of effort. And you can’t put a price on untouched nature, its unique beauty and diverse flora and fauna, can you?

6. A mysterious mountain beauty

If you’re afraid of aliens, orbes of fire and unidentified flying objects, you can forget about this lookout! We’re just joking, of course! The truth is that there are a couple of unusual and slightly scary stories regarding Rtanj, but none of them has actually been verified. What has been verified is that this mountain provides phenomenal viewing point from which you can see even the meeting place of Sava and Danube.

This wasn’t a joke! On a sunny day you can enjoy never ending landscapes from this mysterious beauty. On your way to the highest peak called “the Spike” (“Šiljak”) you will come across meadows brimming with flowers, vast glades and a number of subterranean sources, caves and pits. On account of all of this, there’s never a dull moment on Rtanj!

7. Babin zub and Stara planina

An endless scenery of untouched nature, spacious mountain pastures and dense woods rich with fruit and herbs, picturesque villages and interesting folklore – all these are attributes of  Stara planina. It’s one of the most authentic and beautiful nature reserves and also the home of Serbia’s highest peak – Midžor. We won’t even try to describe the view.

We’ll just tell you that if you still haven’t visited Stara planina, you must do it as soon as possible. Only then will you be able to comprehend why Balkan was named after it. And why it found its place on our list. Until then enjoy these stunning photos, plan your tour of these lookouts and don’t forget to share your impressions and photographs with us!
