The monumental building of the Railway Museum is located at the corner of Hajduk-Veljkov venac and Nemanjina Street in Belgrade.

The building was built in the period between 1927 and 1931 in the style of typical neoclassicism and according to the project of the architect Svetozar Jovanović. It was originally intended for the Ministry of Transport of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

The building stands out among surrounding buildings with its remarkable clock tower, the final motif above the central timpanon of the main façade.

The building was transformed into the Railway Museum in 1950. The first permanent exhibition “Through the history of the Yugoslav railways” was opened in 1953 and it can still be visited today.

The exhibit pieces of great value present the development of the railway in the world and in our country. The exhibition includes the “Rama” locomotive from 1861 that pulled the first parade train to arrive in Sarajevo in 1882. The “Milan” locomotive, the first locomotive built in Serbia in Majdanpek in 1882, can also be seen here.

The Museum owns more than 40,000 items, grouped in several collections. Surely the most significant is the technical collection (collection of locomotives, classic wagons and wagons for narrow-gauge railways, signaling and safety equipment etc), followed by the historical collection, art collection and collection of applied arts.

The Railway Museum also has the archive and a library. The Archive treasures 134,35meters of historical and technical documentation, several thousands of original photos and negatives, collections of geographic and railway maps and posters, and the library has 8,500 titles and 1,235 units of periodicals.

The entrance to the Museum is located at Hajduk-Veljkov venac where you will be welcomed by an old, green locomotive that was operative in the period between 1917 and 1965.

The Museum is opened for visitors on working days from 9 am till 3 pm, and on weekends the visits need to be scheduled on the number (+381 11) 3610-334.
