About the destiny of Generalštab people have talked for years. Numerous are the reasons why it should stay the way it is, and one of the most important reasons is that that is the work of famous Serbian academic Nikola Dobrović, and because it represents the monument of Serbian culture.
Being located in the center of the city, there is no person who has passed by the building and not stopped in front of it for a second to feel its spirit or hear its story. A large number of tourists have their most beautiful photos from Belgrade taken right at this place.
Generalštab was bombed two times during NATO bombing in 1999. For the first time was bombed on the 29th of April, and for the second time on the 7th of May.
However, opinion of Belgrade citizens is divided when it comes to decision whether to knock down and re-build the building of Generalštab, or leave it stand like this in order to tell its story to the future generations. A large number of people cut up rough when ruining this cult building is mentioned. But on the other hand, numerous are those people who can’t think of nothing but tragic period which they went through when they see Generalštab like that. These people find it extremely painful seeing anything that could remind them of 1999.
Work on preparing the terrain for crashing down one part of the building has started a few days ago, and the estimated area is around 5000 square meters.
