Famous French dancer and choreographer Angelin Preljocaj opened the 13th Belgrade Dance Festival at Sava Centar on Saturday, noting that he is honoured by the opportunity because it is a very significant event.

Belgrade is a meeting place of major choreographers and artists who present their works and share ideas, said Preljocaj, who has Albanian roots.

His choreographies “La Stravaganza” and “Wedding” will be performed by the ballet company of the Albanian National Opera at the National Theatre on April 8.

Thirteen is an excellent number because it symbolises the maturity of the festival, and it was the inspiration behind the “Happiness is danced” slogan, which can be understood in several ways, said festival director Aja Jung.

Nederlands Dans Theater 1 opened the first night with three plays: “Shoot the Moon” and “Stop-Motion”, both choreographed by Sol Leon and Paul Lightfoot, and Gabriella Caruso’s “The Missing Door” by Belgium’s Peeping Tom.

Until April 10, the festival will feature over 30 choreographies and 15 companies from 13 countries.
