It is, according to the many, the most beautiful waterfall in Serbia, which leaves breathless even the bravest and the most courageous ones- Tupavica. Namely, severe and cold winters characteristic for the wild beauty which spreads along the borders of Serbia and Bulgaria, have given birth to this completely extraordinary activity- climbing the frozen waterfalls.
This unusual extreme sport becomes more and more interesting every year, and numerous are the tourists who visit these waterfalls just to admire their uniqueness and beauty. Climbing and touring around Stara planina and its hidden treasures represent an unforgettable experience which requires the adequate equipment.
Balkan Peninsula was named after the massive of Stara planina. With 550 km of its length, it connects the two countries – Serbia and Bulgaria and their residents call it the Balkan Mountain. It is settled in the central part of Balkan Peninsula, and it extends along the borders of Serbia and Bulgaria, from Zaječar to the Black Sea.
The fascinating Tupavica Waterfall is settled in a vicinity of Dojkinci village at 1050 m above the sea level and represents the fairy tale image of nature and a hidden jewel in the heart of Stara planina. It is reachable only by the SUV or on foot, down the road that follows the flow of Dojkinac River. There are four bridges on this road which are not on the river, but on its tributaries.
A mind-blowing sight, incredibly fresh air and the untouched nature have always been the winning combination for those who spending time in the nature love above everything else.
This waterfall captivates throughout the year, but it is one-of-a-kind experience seeing this natural phenomenon in winter, when water completely freezes, and it turns into the ice wall.
Besides Tupavica, Čungulj and Piljska Waterfalls are very interesting during the winter time, as well. But, if you’re not a lover of this type of sport, a walk and detour of vast mountain pastures and thick forests overlaid with the snow cover will definitely have a beneficial influence on your mood.
