In the village of Gledić, settled between Kraljevo and Kragujevac, characteristic by its part called Rakija, a special kind of rakija derived from the red plum „ranka“ is made, and placed among the 400 products from all around the world promoted by the Slow food organization from Italy.

Ten manufacturers from this area produce rakija from the ranka plum which is specific in many ways. Besides the fact that it is sweeter than the regular plums, it also has the unique scent and for that reason it is also called „mirišljavka“ (something that smells really nice).

crvena-ranka-300x219This unusual sort of plums was near extinction due to illness that came along with other unknown sorts of plums in our region, and this job around which manufacturers gathered around has saved the red plum from extinction and now it is being cultivated on ten hectares of land in Gledić.

The red ranka represents the oldest sort of rakija plums in our country. Its full fruit, ranka gives every third year and that is why it is less represented in Serbia, and residents of Gledić have decided to renew the plants and the production of rakija in a way that it had been produced a hundred years ago.

Rakija from Rakija is sold in Italy, England, Poland, Slovakia and Belgium.
