Myths and legends: A Mix of traditions

Serbian cultural heritage abounds in myths and legends, and each corner of Serbia, depending on its particular tradition and influences, has stories of its own.

Legends and myths are picturesque stories about nature, history, faith of the world, goods and man. Myths can be found around the world and they are marked by the characteristics of the region. They celebrate heroism, carry certain messages, but above all they speak of the beginning of the world, what brings them into connection with religious interpretations of ancient civilizations.

Serbian cultural heritage is rich with legends, myths and variety of national oral and written literature. Each part of Serbia, depending on tradition and ambient, has its myths, legends, stories, spells, toasts, folk songs, customs, and historic events that can’t be found in chronicles, almanacs or codes.

Soul is the central notion in Serbian legends and mythology. It moves and initiates all things, and everything revolves around it. After death, souls can reincarnate into stone, wood, domestic or wild animals and people.
