Year after year, the prestigious movie and music festival whose maker and founder is director Emir Kusturica, attracts more and more young authors, greats of cinematography and visitors from all around the world. The 9th Kustendorf will not differ in that way compared to the previous ones. The difference will make the competition program itself whose selection traditionally does Dunja Kusturica.
This year, the competition program consists of 17 movies from Serbian and foreign authors. The movies of the young directors from Bulgaria, China, Croatia, Hungary, Iceland, Iran, Mexico, Palestine, Russia, Serbia and Spain will compete for the festival’s award.
They will be judged by the jury which consists of movie producer and the author of documentary movies from Ethiopia Mažida Abdi and movie producer from Argentina Jose Ibanez.
Some of the movies which will make the main program of Kustendorf 2016 are: „If you see Maria“ directed by Ivana Atanasovska, „Artun“ directed by Gudmundur Arnar Gudmundson, „Wartburg“ by David Borbaš, „The city“ by Maša Šarović, „If I had it my way…“ by Marko Grba Singh, „Twosome“ by Maša Nešković, „Return of Erkin“ by Marija Guskova and the remaining ten.
Kustendorf is a movie and music festival held in the ethno village Drvengrad at the hill of Mećavnik near Mokra Gora. It was founded on the 14th of January 2008, as a place where young authors have the opportunity to show their accomplishments, and to the movie greats as a meeting point.
In the framework of now traditional program “Contemporary trends”, some of the best last year’s movies will be shown, as well as their authors who will host workshops afterwards. The visitors will have the opportunity to see a movie called “Read my lips” by Jacques Audiard (winner of Golden Palm), “The Treasure” by Corneliu Porumboiu (winner of the Prix Un Certain Talent award), “Tale of tales” by Matteo Garone etc.
This year in the framework of six days of the festival, a special program unity is also provided under the name “Decolonizing cinema”. Documentary movies which will be shown are: “Concerning Violence” by Goran Hugo Olsson, “Captain Thomas Sankara” by Christophe Cupelin and “A German Youth” by Jean-Gabriel Periot. The subject is review of the dominant narrative about the relationship of the exploiters and the exploited in non-colonial context as well as those of class relations inside western countries.
International movie and music festival was the host to numerous famous persons from all around the world. Some of them are Nikita Mihalkov, Johnny Depp, Monica Belucci, Jim Jarmusch, as well as numerous celebrities from Serbia.
A special segment of the ninth Kustendorf will be dedicated to German producer Karl Baumgartner where Emir Kusturica will present his work with the prominent producer. The Serbian director and founder of the festival in ethno village Drvengrad will host a lecture about a Czechoslovak director František Vláči.
Interesting and various music program is another characteristic of Kustendorf. Partibrejkers and Kolja i Grobovlasnici will be in charge of good mood and great party, as well as Moldavian trumpet player Adam Sting and Armenian reggae band Reincarnation.
